Circuit and antenna properties of diodes mounted in inset dielectric guide

A packaged detector diode has been mounted in Inset Dielectric Guide (IDG) with performance comparable to that achieved in rectangular waveguide [1]. In IDG the diode gives rise to some radiation, which degrades its performance a little. In this paper the circuit and antenna properties of the IDG mounted diode are examined, and it is seen that an equivalent circuit approach produces a model with good accuracy. The diode's bias dependent impedance can influence its radiation properties, and so the IDG mounted diode could be suitable for use in active antenna applications. As only a single diode is used to control each antenna element, this could make a cheap active antenna.
