Benefits of Power Swing Recording

This paper reviews power swing recording and its benefits on power system behavior. We discuss the use of digital fault recorders, wide area monitoring and power swing data management. We cover the recording advantages of fault analysis tools and easy-to-use software. In addition, we address power swing theory, explain how to monitor/analyze swing with advanced monitoring/recording devices, and describe benefits it can yield for the utility. We also describe, through analysis of records, an application of today's digital recorders, which are capable of monitoring and recording power system data at multiple timeframes from high speed transients to long-term trends. Of these recording modes, dynamic swing recording is often least understood, although it is potentially most critical to understanding system stability and optimizing wide area system performance
