Cooperative learning in the quiz section in general chemistry

An attempt to foster a group-study atmosphere began at the University of Connecticut in the fall of 1991 with a pilot program for a single 16-student quiz section. A year later, this was expanded to a 150-student large-lecture section. Roughly one-fifth of all general chemistry students were randomly assigned to that section. For fall 1993, one-half of the general chemistry population is in the study-group project. An analysis of statistical results indicates that, in the spring course, study-group attendance helped student performance.<>
