Gas-cooled divertor design approach for ARIES-CS

A major focus of the Phase II activities of the ARIESCS study included a parallel effort on a conceptual design study of the divertor and on better understanding the divertor physics. A new promising divertor concept was evolved and investigated, and is presented in this paper. While the concept builds on some basic features from recently presented DEMO-related divertor designs [2], a number of new features were introduced and the specific needs of a compact stellarator divertor in terms of manifolds and reactor integration were addressed. In this paper, also major results from the thermo-mechanical analysis of the divertor concept are summarized and key performance, fabrication and integration issues are discussed.
