Development and testing of the AC battery system

In 1990, the Department of Energy tasked Sandia National Laboratories with the responsibility for technical oversight on a development contract awarded to Omnion Power Engineering, Inc. of East Troy, Wisconsin. Sandia assumed responsibility for managing the development and testing of the AC Battery prototype in collaboration with Omnion. The AC Battery is designed to provide up to 250 kW of power, 167 kWh of energy, on a single charge, and to provide up to 200 deep cycle discharges using 384 off-the-shelf, lead-acid marine batteries. The unique features of the system and the most recent field testing results are reported in this paper.<>
