Performance analysis of cellular digital packet data

Cellular digital packet data (CDPD) is the US industry standard for provision of data services using mobile cellular radio systems. It co-exists transparently with voice services, making dynamic use of idle channels (unused by voice). Terminal mobility is transparent to the data service as well, being handled by additions to the functionality of location registers. In this paper, CDPD performance analysis concentrates on two issues: the proportion of mobility management traffic arising from cell changes and its consumption of available bandwidth; and the effects of channel hopping on throughput at the air-interface. The results for mobility processing show that the mobility processing load may significantly influence the system performance, especially in the case that mobiles frequently relocate their positions and there are a large number of mobile data users in the coverage area. On the other hand, the throughput for a channel stream could reach 70% of one dedicated channel capacity through effective radio resource management. It means that the spare capacity in the current radio network could be effectively utilized for packet data transmission.<>
