Quantizing errors in linear time-invariant digital dynamic devices

The general class of LTIV (linear time-invariant) digital dynamic devices includes digital controllers, compensators, filters, and even digital simulation of linear analog models. Digital filter quantizing error analyses, which apply to this general class of digital dynamic devices are well represented in the literature. Although these analyses are generally correct, it would seem that frequency responses derived from pulse responses would not be suitable for evaluating quantizing errors since signal levels are generally low. The authors address this implied problem as well as present and demonstrate new techniques for evaluating H(z) model frequency responses that properly represent digital quantizing errors because these techniques are based on inputs that cause the H(z) variables to assume their full dynamic ranges.<>
