Design analysis of electromagnetic particle clutch

The magnetic particle clutch provides a smooth coupling between two moving shafts. Unlike the friction type, it has the advantage of working under slip conditions without wear problems which makes it a unique alternative for automotive applications. The torque transmitted by the clutch is a function of its geometry and coil current but is independent of the shaft speed. This paper presents an analytical model developed for the magnetic design of the clutch. This model relates the developed electromagnetic torque to the clutch main dimensions and the properties of the magnetic particle used in the gap. The model results were verified using finite element analysis. The clutch was then built and tested. The comparison between the model results and the measured data indicated good agreement.<>
