A piezoelectric actuator model for active vibration and noise control in thin cylindrical shells

A model describing the interaction between a piezoelectric patch and a thin cylindrical shell is presented. The patch is assumed to be curved and the coupling between bending and in-plane deformations, which is due to the curvature, is retained. Through moment and force balancing, the shell loading due to activation of the patch can be expressed in terms of material properties of the patch and shell (thickness, elastic properties, and Poisson ratios), the radius of curvature of the shell, and the voltage being applied to the patch. This provides a model which can be used in a variety of structural acoustics control applications.<>
