The effect of diastolic function on cardiac efficiency

A mathematical model that incorporates the basic features of the diastole is used; these features include nonlinear compliance, viscoelasticity, and active relaxation. Diastolic function is affected by shifts in the elastic pressure-volume curve. It is found that a significant change (up to +or-25%) in total efficiency can occur with shifts in diastolic function.<>
