On applying parallel processing to a versatile induction motor drive system

Parallel processing is becoming a key approach to realise cost-effectively the many features found in a modern induction drive system comprising advanced real-time control, diagnostics and the like. The proposed drive system has been implemented by the application of medium-to-coarse grain parallel processing, through exploiting the novel features of the transputer. Salient features of the drive include real-time generation of pulse-width modulated (PWM) waveforms, programmable soft-starting, on-line user input for PWM parameters, dynamic braking and open loop vector control. Experimental results confirming such features are presented. The low cost, high flexibility and extendability of the drive system prove superior to systems developed by conventional methods.<>
