Discusses the particular problem of allegiance assessment and the system attributes required to undertake it, summarises some of the limitations in this context of 'traditional' methods of handling uncertainty, describes the principles of explanation-based reasoning, and shows, with examples from an illustrative Ada implementation, how it can be used to carry out allegiance assessment.<>
