Implementation of integrated information systems: a comparison of field studies with IS literatures

Integrated information systems (IISs) enable electronic access to design and engineering data throughout a system's life cycle, but companies have been slow to develop the systems. A field study in 1992 of five organizations that were judged to be successful in implementing IISs examined the management perspective on the goals, motives, and factors critical to successful implementation. The results are compared with the results of a similar study in 1984 and with the MIS implementation and strategic IS (SIS) literatures. The comparison suggests that managers' views have shifted and neither the MIS implementation nor the SIS research paradigm adequately encompasses the findings. The paper concludes with suggestions for MIS implementation research to enlarge the boundaries of the systems being studied and for SIS research to explicitly state the underlying assumptions and models.<>
