Steady-state stability assessment of multimachine power systems using catastrophe theory

Catastrophe theory as a qualitative mathematical tool which specially deals with the discontinuities occurring in nonlinear dynamic systems may be used to analyze the stability of power systems. In this paper a new and more appropriate catastrophe model, the cusp catastrophe manifold, and corresponding algorithm are proposed to analyze the steady-state stability in power systems. Compared with the model (A.A. Sallam et al, 1983) and the algorithm (A.A. Sallam, 1988) presented earlier, its resulting analyses are more accurate because its derivation is closely related to the initial operating conditions.<>
