The application of fuzzy grammar to handwritten character recognition

The main disadvantage of formal language theory applied to syntactic pattern recognition is that it is often too rigid to handle real patterns which are usually distorted or noisy. However, it is well known that the concept of vagueness can provide a convenient way for describing ill-defined patterns. In this paper, using handwritten character recognition as an example, we show that fuzzy language can be an effective tool for syntactic pattern recognition.<>
