PALplus: a prototype codec

PALplus has been developed to provide widescreen 16:9 television via a PAL terrestrial channel whilst continuing to serve the existing audience of viewers with 4:3 format TV sets. The equipment was first demonstrated in London in May 1993. This paper looks at the implementation of the PALplus specification on this prototype hardware.<>
