Artefacts and remedies in direct Fourier tomographic reconstruction

In spite of their potential speed advantages, direct Fourier reconstruction methods have been shunned in practice. The reason is artefacts, which could be avoided only by sacrificing most, if not all, of the speed advantage. The authors demonstrate that the artefacts have two distinct sources: imperfect interpolation and cyclic convolution. An improved interpolation (alternatively using linogram sampled data) reduces zeropadding to the level required for suppression of the cyclic convolution effects of the inherent ramp filter.<>
