Multicast in SMDS over an ATM network

It is shown that an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network architecture equipped with connectionless servers at the ATM switches is suitable for switched multimegabit data service (SMDS) support. A multicast tree computation scheme based on the underlying routing procedure is proposed. Two different address handling methods-encapsulation and nonencapsulation-are considered, and their effectiveness in providing multicast service is compared.<>
