Safe, efficient optical interconnects for cable TV

Emerging standards for premises cabling should enable installers to ensure that all optical fibres are protected from physical damage, by strengthened outer jackets, sheathing, and ducts. However, there may still be a problem if a demountable connector is uncoupled while an optical signal is being propagated. Radiated infra-red light may 'bounce' off nearby objects or, in a 'worst case', someone might look directly at the end of a ferrule. Permanent retina damage must always be treated as a serious risk. New optical fibre connectors overcome this problem. The optical circuits can be disconnected without fully withdrawing the ferrule housings from the body. When the housings and bodies are completely disengaged, radiation is automatically blocked by hinged covers on each part. These shutters also protect the optical end-faces.<>
