Method of approximate Lagrangians for direct variational solutions of nonconservative, nonreciprocal and nonlinear circuit problems

The method of approximate Lagrangians (MAL) is explained in general terms. The method is substantially equivalent to the RPG (Rosen-Prigogine-Glansdorff) method and yet conceptually different from it. The approach taken not only provides the RPG-method with a variational basis, but provides a variational basis for Galerkin's method as well. Its relation to Galerkin's nonvariational method is pointed out. The application of MAL to Van der Pol's equation is explained in principle.<>
