The development of synthesized speech systems for the vocally handicapped

A speech aid is usually comprised of a synthetic speech system linked via a computer to an input device such as keyboard or a remote sensor/s. Most speech aids are regarded by consultants, such as speech therapists, as a last resort for victims of vocal impairment who cannot respond to voice therapy. The reasons for this handicap may be physical, such as damage to the vocal chords, or it may stem from cognitive impairment. Victims of cerebro-vascular disease, a very common trauma in society, may well suffer from both.<>
