Optimization of the coil of the LHC main dipole

Mathematical optimization techniques are applied to find the most appropriate design for the superconducting bending magnets for the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). By this means a coil block arrangement for a 56 mm aperture is derived, having a considerably reduced multipole content compared to that obtained in previous design studies.<>
