R&M in conceptual aircraft design

Effectiveness of R&M (reliability and maintainability) in conceptual aircraft design is dependent on successful integration of R&M into the design process. The R&M process must not only integrate R&M tasks, but must also be integrated with other design and engineering functions. Once the process has been established, automation and tools required to support the process can be defined. An element often taken for granted is the skill requirements to effectively and efficiently perform the R&M tasks during conceptual design. The process, automation, and tools all support the R&M engineer, they do not replace him. The authors address the need for R&M in conceptual aircraft design. They provide a status in terms of approaches and technology and their effectiveness. A view of what is needed for R&M to become an effective member of the design team is presented. A process is presented by which the R&M engineer can interact the conceptual design process. Recommendations for realizing this vision are set forth.<>
