Use of a decision aid model enhancer (DAME) for maintenance training

The potential problem of complex maintenance-training equipment interfering with the learning process is addressed. The theoretical basis underlying the problem is examined. The discussion centers around current theories of memory which focus on the relationship between working memory and the long-term store. The concepts of model-enhanced training and mental-model development are presented and discussed in terms of their usefulness in training people to use complex systems. A decision-aid model enhancer (DAME) is presented as a means of conveying a mental model of a simulated aircraft maintenance trainer (SAMT) to users. This DAME represents one method of minimizing the potential burden complex that SAMTs may place on the learning process.<>
