Receiver architectures and VLSI considerations for ERMES

4-PAM/FM, with baseband pulse shaping, has been conditionally adopted as the modulation technique for ERMES (European Radio Messaging System). The paper considers the provisional ERMES radio specification and investigates suitable receiver architectures and the implications for pager chip development. ERMES will be the next generation paging system. Using frequency and time division multiplexing and comprehensive addressing features, ERMES will offer inter-operator and European-wide roaming and a wide variety of pagers types (tone-only, numeric, alpha-numeric). The development plane provisionally schedules network introduction for 1993.<>
