Alternative cost-effective applications of power factor correction

Alternative cost-effective methods of applying power factor (PF) correction capacitors are discussed based on actual installations in service for up to ten years. Specific applications and test results from actual installations are presented. The purpose of these application techniques is to utilize existing electrical distribution equipment in the installation of very large values of power factor correction capacitors. It is concluded that PF capacitors can be installed at motor control centers or at the motors, thus providing maximum benefits from reduced reactive current, lower system losses, release of system transformer capacity, and minimum switching transients. Expenses associated with providing numerous traditionally sized PF capacitors, additional disconnects, and/or the installation of large and more costly automatic PF capacitor packages are minimized or eliminated. Paybacks of less than one year can be expected.<>
