Standardization opportunities with V.fast FAX/modem technology and ISDN terminal adaptors

It is expected that the ISDN and the PSTN will coexist for some time. The need for terminal adaptors to interface existing terminal equipment to the ISDN, and the need for functions in a terminal adaptor to facilitate interworking with the PSTN puts an important focus on the evolution of terminal adaptor equipment. The authors discuss the following topics: common terminal adaptor and modem services; new opportunities for standardisation in PSTN modems; new opportunities for standardisation in PSTN FAX machines; and ISDN/PSTN interworking.<>
