Magnetic disk technology for combat aircraft

The authors discuss the design, development, qualification, and future of magnetic-disk technology used on combat aircraft. Model 8400 series magnetic disks have successfully demonstrated the viability of Winchester technology in harsh environments and dispelled the notion that all hard disks are delicate vulnerable devices. The authors describe the technology underlying the success of these systems as well as testing associated with qualification.
