PSAT: proactive signaling architecture for IP traceback

As the Internet becomes pervasive, the vulnerability of some fundamental design aspects of the Internet has also become relevant. The rising threat of cyber attacks makes the IP traceback problem very relevant to today's Internet security. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to track IP traffic to its source due to the stateless nature of the IP protocol, and to the use of concealment techniques such as IP spoofing by attackers. In order to address this limitation, numerous approaches have been proposed to support IP traceability. In this work, we propose a signaling architecture for tracing anonymous IP packets back towards their source(s), where specialized signaling entities exchange, through a simple security-oriented signaling protocol, reliable signaling information that can be used for a simple and efficient trace-back. This solution constitutes a novel and efficient approach to deal with the traceback problem
