Planning local access millimeter wave systems

A modeling technique is proposed for determining the diffraction loss between a transmitter and receiver when the intervening terrain consists of smooth hills and urban detail. This modeling approach has been applied to determine the frequency reuse distance and frequency assignment plan for an 80 km*80 km region of the UK, targeted for the deployment of a point-to-multipoint, millimeter-wave, video distribution network. It is demonstrated that, at millimeter-wave frequencies, failure to take account of the effects of urban detail can lead to an overestimate of the reuse distance by a factor in excess of 4.<>
