Digital mobile transmission channel characterization from experimental measurements

This paper reports measurements from 10 kbits/s mobile transmissions in the 900 MHz band in a medium density urban area. Error distributions are analyzed and related to the error generation models of Gilbert and Fritchman. The parameters in Fritchman's model are optimized and it is found that good fits can be obtained with a Markov chain having three error-free states and one error state. Some results for the Aulin's binary symmetric channel model are also given, although the parameters are difficult to estimate due to the relatively small number and lengths of the available recordings.
