Mechanical properties and microstructure of intermetallic coating on the basis of the Ni-Al system

Phase composition, microstructure and morphology of the surface of an intermetallic coating are investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray analysis and atom force microscopy (AFM). It is shown that Ni/sub 3/Al is the main phase of the intermetallic coating for all investigated samples. There is a small amount of the NiAl and AlFe/sub 3/C phases. The application of ion beam treatment changes the atom long-range order parameter and the elastic microstresses of the crystalline lattice. Wear resistance increases 3-4.5 times, the friction coefficient decreases 1.5 times.
