Time Sidelobe Performance of Low Time-Bandwidth Product Linear FM Pulse Compression Systems

Computed results are presented on the achieveable sidelobe suppression in linear frequency modulated (FM) pulse compression systems employing Hamming weighting. The use of external frequency domain weighting filters as well as that of internally time domain weighted compression fiiters is investigated for time-bandwidth products between ten and 400. Improvements resulting from cosinetapering the rectangular chirp envelope and the influence of the taper length are discussed. Performance degradation due to the Doppler effect is examined for frequency shifts up to 10 percent of system bandwidth.
