Impact of component crosstalk on the bit-error-rate performance of a WDM cross-connect switch based on FBG-OC

In this paper performance results of a WDM cross-connect switch based on FBG-OC (fiber Bragg grating-optical circulator) are evaluated including the effect of intra-band crosstalk. Results show that the system suffers a power penalty (at BER = 10/sup -9/) of 2.06 dB if the value of fiber Bragg grating crosstalk factor (X/sub FG/) is increased from -70 dB to -25 dB for a fixed value of optical circulator crosstalk factor, X/sub OC/ = -55 dB and a power penalty (at BER = 10/sup -9/) of 2.24 dB when the value of X/sub OC/ is increased from -50 dB to -25 dB for a fixed value of X/sub FG/ = -45 dB.
