Smart power in motion control: how semiconductors are reshaping the marketplace

The topics discussed are limitations of monolithic smart power devices; smart power in motion control; and novel smart power devices. Power semiconductors have evolved rapidly over the last twenty years, allowing electronic motion control to expand into more and more motion control market segments. High-frequency pulse-width-modulated (PWM) motor controls from 1 to 100 HP and beyond are common. A revolution is occurring in the semiconductor field-the smart power revolution. Led by the automotive and consumer industries, these processes, techniques, and devices are beginning to make their way into industrial equipment designs. The historical development and implications of these devices on drive technology and design in the 90s are addressed.<>
