Characterization and comparison of modern layer-2 Ethernet survivability protocols

Ensuring the survivability and recoverability of computer networks under fault conditions requires the selection and testing of the appropriate protocols that handle failure events. While testing using the actual networking equipment is the most accurate, it is not always feasible due to cost and time constraints. Instead, simulation can be used. However, results may not always represent actual network behaviors. This study first looks at selected layer-2 Ethernet protocols available for increasing the survivability of a network, i.e., spanning tree protocol and rapid spanning tree protocol. These protocols are tested on two small live networks and then via simulation. After the simulations are validated by these tests, the protocol's performance is then characterized for larger topologies.
