Design evolution of no. 6 (IEC R-40) lithium/thionyl chloride cell

The first design of a lithium/thionyl chloride cell was based on the early performance data generated with the low rate bobbin construction D size cell. This design is described. A double anode cell redesign is outlined. A cell design with a spring-loaded electrode structure is discussed. Another version of this cell design was developed. This cell design in a reserve battery configuration proved safe under a variety of abusive conditions, including incineration. Fifteen years of the design evolution are reviewed. The discharge rate capability and safety features of all designs are considered.<>
