Benchmarking Clinical Engineering Program

Professional labor shortage in healthcare delivery system and specifically the management of staffing effectiveness in clinical engineering field are recent developments where shortage of comparative information exist and almost no information on its impact on performance outcomes. We attempted over the past few years to define and measure optimal application of manpower to medical technology management in the hospital setting. Others who studied in this issue suggested several indicators that can predict manpower loading and efficiency; however, the assessment model is yet to be tested. So far, studies showed that the best predictor of staffing needs is the medical technology level of comprehensiveness, the volume of the managed inventory, the conditions of the inventory and the competency of the labor force and management model deployed. This presentation will attempt to review the suggested indicators and a proposal for data collection that can be used as benchmark for comparing clinical engineering programs.
