Attenuation and diversity effect in harmonic current propagation study

Harmonic problem is a serious concern in power systems. Typical case study is helpful for understanding the harmonic effects. This paper provides a simplified method of investigation and understanding of the technique of harmonic generation, propagation in a typical three-phase low voltage system as well as single and three-phase loads. The loads have been carefully chosen to see the effects and interaction of low and high frequency harmonics. Their combined effects on the transformer core and losses are also found. The harmonics current propagation through a typical power grid which include three phase loads such as the thyristor rectifier controlled DC motor and the induction motor fed by the PWM rectifier-inverter and single phase loads such as personal computer power supply, fluorescent lamp and UPS are studied. Through these loads, harmonic attenuation and diversity effects are studied. Experimental results are presented to validate the simulation results.
