Development of coaxial and detachable current leads

Superconducting and cryogenic electrical devices require a current supply from a few tens of amperes to 30-40 kA into the cold cryostat area. When designing the leads an optimal modification is chosen which puts the minimal heat influx into the area being cooled, depending on the power supply regime and the strength of current. For the intermittent current input the use of gas-cooled coaxial and detachable current leads seems to be preferable. The authors discuss the principles of construction and describe pilot model designs of such leads for current strengths of up to 10 kA. The results of mathematical modeling of coaxial leads with the aim of their operation analysis within a wide range of parameter change are given. Preliminary test results on coaxial and detachable lead pilot models are reported.<>
