Array beamforming for slow FH spread-spectrum WLANs

A beamforming algorithm is presented for slow frequency-hopping wireless LAN which does not require prior knowledge of direction-of-arrival. The algorithm is motivated by Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 FH networks, in which training sequences are transmitted to establish connections. Using prior knowledge of the training sequence, or post-beamforming data decisions, it is shown that correlation matrices containing interference-only and interference-plus-signal are readily formed. Established SNR maximization techniques are then employed to jointly suppress interference spatially, and beamform in the direction of the desired signal.
