Theoretical investigation on the influence of phase errors in AWG

The optical path deviation, also quoted as phase error, is a key element determining the crosstalk and insertion loss performance in arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG). This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the character of phase errors in AWG. We have developed a statistical model to estimate the influence of phase errors in silica-based AWG by using Fourier optics and scalar diffraction theory. Also, the filter property of AWG caused by phase errors is analyzed. To maintain the adjacent crosstalk <-25 dB. There is a standard deviation maximum /spl sigma//sub max/ of phase errors to the design of AWG.
