Dynamic routing of military tactical traffic over satellites

The system requirements for the EHF satellite communication terminal, part of a communication system that also includes wire-connected and mobile subscribers, central office and tandem circuit switches, and multiplex equipment, are described. Approaches for routing TRI-TAC and mobile subscriber equipment (MSE) traffic over a satellite on a call-by-call basis using demand-assignment multiple-access (DAMA) techniques are investigated. The results of a computer simulation that determines DAMA orderwire call processing performance in the benign and stressed environment shows that only modest added delays are introduced by the DAMA satcom system, with blocking of calls within acceptable grade of service limits. It is shown that the decrease in required satellite payload throughput with DAMA is substantial compared to the current implementation, which uses fixed routed links.<>
