Analysis, control and design of crossbar and banyan based broadband packet switches, for integrated traffic

Approximate Markov chain models are developed for crossbar and banyan packet switches built with nodes of arbitrary size, with each node having output buffers of arbitrary size, operating in an environment of multiclass traffic with priority. A simple design change is incorporated to obtain a straightforward mechanism to control the throughput of each traffic class. Effects of flexible priority disciplines are presented as a means of controlling the average time delays of each traffic class. Techniques for obtaining the time delay distributions for packets of each traffic class are illustrated.<>
