Fiber to the pedestal . . . then what?

The possible avenues for evolution of the fiber pedestal are presented. The effects are analyzed on three key components of the fiber-based distribution system: the architecture, the optical network unit, and the subscriber drop. The technical and economic issues regarding the evolution toward various broadband networks are also provided. It is concluded that current analysis favors the placement of a star or logical bus in the distribution plant and the design of a pedestal which is capable of future service evolution. Movement of fiber into the subscriber drop will ultimately hinge on the demand for broadband services.<>
