An asymmetric intracavitary applicator for hyperthermia treatment of cancer

Researchers at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California, have shown that the placement of two small Teflon tubes containing fiber-optic temperature probes adjacent to a monopole applicator has a significant effect on the heating pattern. A theoretical model that predicts the change in the heating pattern has been developed. The model is based on the solution of the electromagnetic fields of an eccentrically coated monopole antenna, as originally proposed by Wu, Shen, and King (see IEEE Trans. Antennas Propagat., vol.AP-23, p.57-62, 1975) but, in addition, it includes junction effects. Results from the theoretical model have been compared with experimental results.<>
