Open gradient magnetic separation with linear periodic current arrays

A versatile computer program was used for the rapid exploration of novel superconducting magnet systems, their geometry, and particle drop point within their field. After a brief examination of the split-pair and the racetrack OGMS systems, the linear racetrack system is extended to represent a vertically stacked, periodic, linear array of alternating-current-carrying wire bundles. It is demonstrated how, from the viewpoint of full utilization of available force in a limited system, OGMS can be employed advantageously in the separation of diamagnetic particles, and how nonlinear periodic systems and/or full utilization of all gradients around a magnet may enhance the separation prospects for paramagnetic particles. The need for optimization of array spacing and particle drop point in the field is demonstrated.<>
