Development of a VR Digital Game-Based Attention Assessment System for Children with ADHD

This study focuses on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It integrates Virtual Reality (VR) technology, digital picture books, and serious game concepts to develop the “VR Digital Game-Based Attention Assessment and Evaluation System.“ The system aims to assist young children with ADHD in attention testing and early diagnosis. ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood, characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Without timely treatment, it may affect future life and social interactions. Based on DSM-V diagnostic criteria and five attention models, the study designed tests covering focused, sustained, and other types of attention. Using VR digital picture books, the system records participants' visual movement paths and gaze duration to analyze attention performance precisely. Experimental results show that children with ADHD exhibit scattered visual focus, disorganized reading sequences, and shorter gaze durations. In contrast, typical children display concentrated attention and orderly visual behaviour. The system applies to clinical diagnosis, educational screening, and home testing. Parents can conduct tests via mobile devices with an accuracy rate of 80%. The system supports doctors in ADHD screening and treatment evaluation and provides educators with a non-invasive screening tool for early detection and intervention. This innovative study combines VR and digital games, offering reliable technological support for ADHD diagnosis and continuous evaluation. It holds significant value in clinical, educational, and community contexts.
