Virtual Hall-Effect Sensor for BLDC Motor Drive with Velocity Controller

BrushLess Direct Current (BLDC) motors are widely used in applications like automobile, aerospace, household appliances, office automation, fuel pumps and industry. BLDC motors speed is not limited by the power frequency, this result in increased capacity, minimization of size and motors rated speed is designed higher. Nowadays most of the induction motors used to drive compressors are replaced by BLDC motor. Compared to Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) BLDC motor is having higher power density. Control of BLDC motor is obtained using hall sensor. Sensored BLDC motor causes reliability issues at high speed, thermal sensitivity issue, harmonic, noise, increases size and cost. But this problem is overcome with the help of sensorless BLDC motor. This article presents a novel speed estimator for sensorless speed control of BLDC motor drive. Sensorless commutation saves cost, expands the speed spectrum, robust and reliable for the Electric Vehicle (EV) application. Furthermore, comprehensive study on various advanced control of BLDC motors is discussed in detail.
