A Reduced Switching State PWM Single-Stage 3-Phase Matrix Inverter Without Device Voltage Spikes

This research introduces a novel topology and modulation for a single-stage DC to three-phase AC high-frequency isolated matrix converter. It is designed to eliminate voltage spikes on the matrix converter (AC) side devices without resorting to traditional clamp circuits. The proposed converter incorporates an innovative modulation strategy on the matrix converter, which would reduce the number of switching states per switching half-cycle from three to two. A topological solution is then implemented on this converter, enabling the complete elimination of voltage spikes across the transformer secondary and matrix converter devices. This clampless operation, combined with fewer switching transitions (less switching losses) and soft switching of the devices, enhances efficiency. The feasibility of the proposed solution is validated at a 2.5 kW power level with a switching frequency of 100 kHz, achieving a peak efficiency of 96.5%.
